What is Healthy Active Learning?

Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Education and Health to improve the well-being of tamariki through healthy eating and drinking and quality physical activity.

Sport Hawke’s Bay is excited to be part of this national initiative. Our Healthy Active Learning Advisors are here to support school leaders and teachers in planning and providing quality physical activity and health education experiences for tamariki.

The support and resources provided to your school through this initiative come at no cost and will build on the existing strengths of your team and within your school and kura. We are here to work alongside leaders and teachers and tailor support in partnership with your school.

Celebrating 5 Years of Healthy Active Learning: Impact Report Now Available

Sport Hawke’s Bay is proud to celebrate a significant milestone for the Healthy Active Learning kaupapa, with the release of the new five-year impact report highlighting the difference this nationally supported initiative is making for tamariki and rangatahi across Aotearoa. The report reflects the collective efforts of the Healthy Active Learning workforce, schools, kura, early learning services, Regional Sports Trusts, and community partners over the past five years.

The findings demonstrate the scale of the programme’s reach, engaging more than 1,000 schools, kura and early learning services nationwide, including almost 50% of all primary and intermediate schools. The report showcases positive outcomes for ākonga wellbeing, physical activity, social connection, and participation in learning.

Key themes highlighted in the report include:

  • Increased physical activity and social connection among ākonga.
  • Wellbeing becoming a stronger focus within teaching, learning and school culture.
  • Greater confidence among teachers to deliver Health and Physical Education using culturally responsive and inclusive approaches.
  • Strong local relationships and community partnerships supporting positive outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi.
  • A demonstrated social return on investment of $2.10 in social and economic benefits for every $1 invested.

The report also reinforces the importance of a locally led, relationship-based approach, recognising the vital role communities, schools, whānau and organisations play in creating lasting positive change.

At Sport Hawke’s Bay, we are proud to have contributed to this journey through our Healthy Active Learning team and the partnerships we have built across the region. The report provides valuable insights into what has been achieved and the opportunities that lie ahead as we continue to support healthier, more active and connected communities.
