Sport Hawke’s Bay announces new structure to take organisation forward

Rachel Gunson, Caitlin McIvor and Dani Paki

Sport Hawke’s Bay has created three new roles to better support staff as they look to the future and explore new ways to support the Hawke’s Bay community to be active and well.

Former General Manager, Ryan Hambleton, was promoted to the Chief Executive role in January 2024 and as a result the internal structure was reviewed. In response to the promotion, three new Team Leader roles were established with all three successful applicants coming from within Sport Hawke’s Bay.

Ryan says “It was important that we looked to promote within Sport Hawke’s Bay for these new roles. I am a big believer in supporting staff within an organisation, if you have the right people to do the job, they should be given an opportunity. We have some talented and dedicated team members, and it was great to work through the process and have a number of people put their hand up for the roles, all of whom would have been capable and done a great job”.

“We see the Team Leader roles as being captains of their team, they will still be involved in the day-to-day mahi alongside their team members, but it provides a new leadership opportunity for three new people and also to have some diversity amongst the Management team”

The three positions will report to Sue Smith, the current General Manager who will now oversee all Sport Hawke’s Bay operational staff in Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay.

“This is an exciting opportunity to have new ideas and opinions contributing to the operations of Sport Hawke’s Bay. Caitlin, Rachel and Dani have shown they are ready to lead their teams, and I look forward to supporting their development as new leaders in our sector” adds Sue.

“It is great to be able to add to our very capable Management team. Sue, Sara and Tracy have so much knowledge and experience in leading their teams and now by bringing in the Team Lead roles, I truly believe we have the right people leading the organisation into the future” Ryan adds.

The Senior Leadership Team of Ryan Hambleton, Sue Smith and Sara Bird (Wairoa Community Centre Manager) will be joined by Tracy Wilton (Finance Manager).

The Management Team will consist of Senior Leadership along with the three new Team Leader roles and current Team Leads, Eana Young (Active Recreation Team Lead), Diana Booth (Community Cycling Development Officer) and Amanda Lemalu (Human Resources Advisor).
