Our role in Secondary School Sport
Sport Hawke’s Bay is committed to providing students with meaningful and high-quality sporting opportunities that help them realise their potential and pursue their ambitions within the Secondary School setting.
Our focus continues to be on fostering environments that reflect the principles of Balance is Better - prioritising wellbeing, development, and long-term engagement in sport. Sport continues to be a powerful connector for our rangatahi, building a strong sense of belonging, community, and connection across diverse backgrounds.
Beyond the physical and emotional benefits, sport empowers young people to contribute positively to their school community, shape school culture, and identify with their school values and ethos.

How can we help?
"As the Sport Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Director, it brings me immense pride to advocate for and support our Secondary Schools to help increase participation in sport of rangatahi across
Te Matau-a-Māui. I’m passionate about creating opportunities for all Secondary School rangatahi to get active, get involved and create memorable, lifelong experiences.
I work closely with our school sport enablers, student leaders, and community partners to grow participation and ensure sport is forever inclusive, engaging, and accessible for everyone. I want to encourage our rangatahi to be involved in sport through their Secondary School years so they receive the benefits of building confidence, connection, and character. I’m proud to advocate for Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools to ensure every student has the chance to experience the benefits that sport can bring.
We have a bunch of resources, working groups and information to help maximise your success in the Secondary School setting. You'll find links to several tools and documents below or you can contact me for more information."

'Active As' in Hawke's Bay Secondary Schools
Active As is a programme that supports secondary schools and wharekura to provide positive and inclusive active recreation and sport opportunities for their students. It aims to enhance the wellbeing and learning of students through increased physical activity.
Centred around the voices of rangatahi, Active As is underpinned by
Mana Taiohi, the principle-based framework supports those working with young people. It acknowledges the mana young people bring or carry and actively works to enhance that.
Te Aute College rangatahi leading the 'Active As' way
Trampolines have become a breakout hit at Te Aute College in Central Hawke’s Bay. Since being installed earlier this year, students have had to set up their own rules to manage the demand at breaktimes.
Stepping outside their previously rugby centred comfort zone, they've created opportunities to get involved in a variety of sports they would not otherwise have taken part in. This has lead to an incredible 96% participation rate in physical activity across the kura as well as contributing to a an 100% NCEA pass rate across all year levels!
The kura is one of five that Sport Hawke's Bay suppport across the wider Hawke's Bay region who are involved in the Active As programme. Here's a little look at how our rangatahi at Te Aute College have redefined physical activity in their kura to become more inclusive and engaging.
