Chief Executive's View

The Beijing Olympics have highlighted why sport plays such an important part in the lives of us all, whether we are an aspiring athlete or an armchair critic.

Listening to Michael Phelps after he won his eighth gold medal, confirming his place as the greatest Olympian of all time said it all. Phelps said that as a kid he had a dream to compete in the Olympics and his advice to all youngsters was to dream big and to follow those dreams. Likewise our Kiwi golden girl Valerie Vili also talked about having a goal and being prepared to work hard to achieve it. Our golden twins of Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell are of the same mould. They have had a difficult build up to these Olympics but have never lost sight of the end result, and as a result join an extraordinary group of Kiwi’s with back to back Olympic gold medals.

The message of these three examples are basically the same – have a dream, mix in some desire and do all you can to stay on track to fulfill your true potential.

Our kids today are never more stimulated than by the successes of their idols in achieving their sporting goals and all around New Zealand Kiwi kids will have renewed interest to participate in all kinds of sports and whether they become Olympic Champions or not, they have been stimulated to dream that one day they might be a good as Michael Phelps or Valerie Vili. What potential lies ahead for our kids can only be imagined. Most will never become Olympic Champions and some may well find that their chosen sport is not for them. However, up and down the country mums and dads will be looking at how they can reschedule the daily taxi service to ensure that children get an opportunity to give it a go. For some parents with rising fuel and grocery bills, additional costs of participation or the simple logistics of getting kids to practice for 3 to 4 sports per week this can be almost an impossible challenge. But many do achieve it.

So in acknowledging the sporting heroes of these Olympics and their single minded determination to achieve their goals, I also acknowledge the parents, grandparents and caregivers who helped get them started, and say thanks to those that are currently working on their new travel plans for the family taxi. Whether you have future Olympic Champions onboard or not, your contribution towards keeping kids active is a gold medal winning performance!

Dirt Jump Park in Hawkes Bay

We have developed a one question online survey, asking the local "Dirt Bikers" where a Dirt Jump Park could be built in the Hawkes Bay. We welcome your positive feedback, with this very simple survey. 25 have responded so far. We need at least 50 before approaching the councils. (The more responses, the better the result) Thank you
