Within the Development Team at Sport Hawke’s Bay there are three personnel with the priority of getting children aged 5 to 12 years more active more often. These are Active Schools Facilitator Wairoa, Active Schools Facilitator Napier/Hastings and the Development Officer – Junior Sector.
The Active Schools Facilitators work with specific schools while the Junior Development Officer works across the Hawke’s Bay region to implement the Active Schools ethos and to create opportunities for quality physical activity. This will assist schools with meeting recent changes to National Education Guidelines and National Administrative Guidelines.
Active Schools is a Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) initiative to help address the research indicating that overall physical activity levels of children and young people are declining. The Active Schools initiative has been developed using a strengths based approach targeting the barriers and enablers to physical activity in and around school communities. SPARC utilised much information, recommendations and research in developing an initiative that has the best potential for successfully and sustainably increasing physical activity levels of children.
The purpose of this initiative is:
• To increase awareness, skills and education regarding quality physical activity and physical education within school communities.
• To enhance the wellbeing of students and staff in school communities
• To strengthen the connections within communities that facilitate quality physical activity experiences for young people
