"Linking people of all ages with a disability to sport and active recreation"
Sport Hawke's Bay is committed to ensuring that all programmes, events, and courses they facilitate are accessible, and promoted to people with a disability. The Sport Opportunity Programme works on the premise that people with a disability should have the opportunity to participate in their choice of sport or active recreation.
Parents, caregivers, teachers or advocates of children aged 5 - 18 years are eligible to apply to the Halberg Trust Activity Fund for grants to cover the additional cost of particpating in community sport and recreation with regard to adapted equipment or skill development. Past funding examples include trikes, swimmming lessons, support workers for mainstream holiday programmes and customised sports equipment, although there are many other opportunities to access this fund.
No Exceptions Training workshops are designed to provide clubs, community organisations and teachers with practical, specific skills and strategies to include children, youth and adults with disabilities in physical education, sport and active recreation. They are interactive workshops which promote positive attitudes and aim to increase confidence to achieve best practice.
The Development Officer - Sport Opportunity can also:
- Assist regional sports organisations and clubs to implement a disability action plan
- Assist event directors and facility providers to run inclusive events and programmes
- Provide sport specific information for activity adaptation for coaches and instructors
- Provide practical ideas and training re inclusion for teachers and teacher aides
- Assist people with a disability to join a sport or recreation club
