Active Schools is a SPARC initiative designed to increase levels of physical activity in primary schools.
Unfortunately as physical activity levels among the population decrease, the levels of obesity and related diseases continue to rise. 15 proactive primary schools in Hawkes Bay have taken a big step to challenge this by becoming Active Schools and developing a sustainable physical activity culture.
Sport Hawkes Bay and the Active Schools initiative aims to improve physical activity opportunities and experiences in our primary schools by:
- Providing schools with a quality teaching resource outlining co-curricula and cross-curricula physical activity opportunities for kids throughout the school day.
- Working with teachers to help them get the most from the Active Schools teaching resource.
- Supporting collaborative school and community-wide physical activity planning.
These schools have committed to being part of this two year project to generate a way of life whereby their school community value and prioritize physical activity. This supports the Active Schools philosophy which is underpinned by three key messages:
- An Active School provides child-centered physical activity.
- An Active School takes ownership to sustain an active environment and programmes that enhance physical activity.
- An Active School is part of and contributes to and active community.
